Greeting

The pandemic caused by COVID-19 has been with us since early 2020, but there seems to be a small way out. In 2023, the 64th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists (Sendai Annual Meeting) will be held as an in-person meeting. The previous three meetings, in Osaka, Matsue, and Tsukuba, could not be held in person, so if it is held as planned, it will be the first in-person annual meeting for four years. The pandemic has restricted many activities, including research. On the other hand, there has been a by-product in the dramatic development of online communication tools. The success of the Matsue and Tsukuba Annual Meetings, which were held online, showed us a new direction for the Annual Meetings. The Sendai Annual Meeting will therefore be a hybrid meeting that can also be attended online, with the aim of ensuring that “no one is left behind”.

The previous Annual Meeting in Sendai (the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists) was scheduled to be held in March 2011 at the Kawauchi Campus of Tohoku University. Due to the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on 11 March, it could not be held. With this in mind, the Annual Meeting Committee is pleased to be able to hold an Annual Meeting in Sendai, after a 12-year delay. Since 2011, substantial progress has been made in recovering from the disaster. In addition, with the opening of the Sendai Subway Tozai Line in 2015, and Kawauchi Station (four stops from Sendai) on campus, transportation to and from the venue has become more convenient.

To ensure further development of plant science, researchers need to meet, exchange information, and discuss freely. The Sendai Annual Meeting will be the first in-person meeting in four years, since the 60th Annual Meeting in March 2019, in Nagoya. The Annual Meeting Committee members sincerely hope that it will be a place for reunions and encounters, and look forward to seeing many of you there.
