Taiwan-Japan Plant Biology 2017 (TJPB2017) was the first joint meeting organized between the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists and the Taiwan Society of Plant Biologists. It was held in Taipei, between the 3rd and 6th November 2017, and included 75 invited talks, 73 short talks and 350 poster presentations (see pp. 1099–1103, Nishimura et al. 2018). In this Spotlight Issue, we present some of the emerging themes discussed during the TJPB2017 sessions on light response, photosynthesis, and organelles, entitled ‘From light signals/signaling to photosynthesis and chloroplast development’.
The cover image shows a composite illustration of chloroplast images taken from leaves of Arabidopsis (bright field microscopy, observed through the small magnifying glass) and maize (transmission electron microscopy, observed through the large magnifying glass), superimposed on a green cherry leaf. The background confocal microscopy images show chloroplasts from Arabidopsis leaves emitting green florescent protein signals corresponding to chlorophagic bodies.
