Plants are immensely diverse and employ a multitude of shared and unique strategies to cope with changing environments and with their interactions with other organisms. Advances in genome sequencing technologies has substantially accelerated our understanding of the molecular-genetic strategies employed by not only model plants but also by wild species in nature. This special issue of Plant and Cell Physiology showcases 16 research and review articles that explore the cutting-edge of research on the genetic and molecular dynamics of plants in nature. The issue is organised and introduced by Takashi Tsuchimatsu, Eriko Sasaki, Yasuhiro Sato, and Vincent Castric (see accompanying Editorial).
