Monoterpenes are a class of C10 compounds that, due to their volatility and diverse chemical structures, are responsible for the characteristic flavors and aromas of commercial herbs and fruits. While geranyl diphosphate (GPP) is the sole substrate for monoterpenes and is typically synthesized in plastids via the methylerythritol phosphate pathway, in strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa) GPP is synthesized in the cytosol where it is used for (S)-linalool production via the mevalonate pathway, however, the enzyme responsible for its biosynthesis has until now remained unknown. In this issue, Tachibana et al. report the unusual dual function of a cytosol-localized prenyl diphosphate synthase, responsible for GPP and (to a lesser extent) farnesyl diphosphate production; a unique enzyme characteristic that may have commonly evolved in the Rosaceae.
