Because of the spread of COVID-19, we have decided to reformat the 63rd annual meeting, originally scheduled to take place on site in Tsukuba to online meeting. We updated General Information on the website.
(October 7, 2021)
I am pleased to inform you that we plan to hold the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists between Tuesday, March 22 and Thursday, March 24, 2022 at the Tsukuba International Congress Center in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture. On the afternoon of the last day, in addition to research presentations by junior and senior high school students, the Tsukuba International Congress Center will play host to Tsukuba Science Edge, an international contest for scientific ideas for junior and senior high school students.
It has been 16 years since the 47th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists was held at the University of Tsukuba in March 2006. The Tsukuba Express train line opened the year before, connecting Tsukuba to Akihabara in as little as 45 minutes, and the subsequent development of residential areas and other amenities along this line has made the city more convenient. Unlike the previous conference, this year’s conference will be held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center, which is an 8-minute walk from Tsukuba Station, the last stop on the Tsukuba Express. The nature of the venue means that we plan to have more poster presentations than usual. The Annual Meeting Committee, consisting of faculty members from the University of Tsukuba and other researchers from nearby research institutes, is currently preparing for the meeting.
The 61st Annual Meeting in Osaka was scheduled to be held in March 2020, but due to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the difficult decision was made to cancel the meeting. However, we were able to recognize results for each member by deeming their presentations as having been made when their conference abstracts were disclosed. Thanks to the efforts of all concerned, the 62nd Annual Meeting in Matsue was held online in March 2021 to great success, demonstrating a new way of holding Annual Meetings.
Although the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games are scheduled to be held in the summer of 2021, the future is still uncertain due to the spread of new COVID-19 variants, the progress of vaccinations, and other factors. Despite this, we plan to hold our meeting at the actual venue however possible. Above all else, the Annual Meeting serves as a venue for members to advance each other’s research by presenting their latest achievements and discussing them with their peers. Exchanges of information and interactions between presentations, whether in the break room or at the reception, also lead to unexpected developments for future research. If the Annual Meeting in Tsukuba goes ahead as scheduled, it will be the first time in three years, since the 60th Annual Meeting in Nagoya in March 2019, that we will all get to meet up with each other under the same roof. On behalf of all the members of the Annual Meeting Committee, we are sincerely looking forward to seeing you there.
